My first Birkin was black, and my second was gold - both with palladium hardware. You can't go wrong with either, though the black is a little dressier in my opinion and the gold . You can't go wrong with black with GHW or gold with GHW. Both are so classic and versatile. I have black with GHW as my first birkin, and am waiting for my gold with GHW now. Gold hardware is truly the classic. It was the only metal offered for many years at Hermes and I believe that it goes with everything. For this reason, most vintage bags will have gold hardware. Palladium hardware is newer and looks more contemporary/modern. I feel that perhaps it looks a bit younger and perhaps more subtle. I have a Birkin 30 in Togo leather, palladium hardware in the color Black. Have this for 3 years now. My second order I then acquired a Birkin 30 in Etain, Togo leather with rose gold hardware. A wonderfully dark slightly iridescent looking 2007 black Birkin 35 in Fjord with palladium hardware in what looks like very good condition (partial set). A nicely glossy obviously a little more worn (corners a little rubbed) 2002 black Birkin 35 in Ardennes with gold hardware in good condition (full set). I'm a smart casual dresser.
