The race from many tycoons in the watch industry to invent the first self-winding chronograph made 1969 a revolutionary year for watchmaking. The Calibre-11 was the first to achieve this status, a manifestation of a collaboration between Heuer, Breitling, Hamilton, and chronograph specialist Dépraz & Co., . Breitling Navitimer (ref. During the 1960s, Breitling chose to replace the Venus 178 movement with the Valjoux 7740 before the revolutionary Caliber 11 was introduced into the Navitimer series in 1969. The movement was most memorable because it necessitated a left-hand crown. The first modern Breitling Navitimer that was introduced to the market featured a reworked Valjoux 7750, which you’re probably rather familiar with since it’s the most frequently used automatic chronograph movement in the world.
Minor updates occurred through the 2000s, but the Navitimer was still fitted with the modified Valjoux 7750. In 2009 Breitling released the B01 movement, their first in-house movement and the heart of the current Navitimer. The Valjoux 7750 is by far the most common swiss made chronograph movement in production, with the ETA 2894-2 in second with a 37 Jewel movement. The ETA 2894-2 differs in that it uses a base 2892-2 with a chronograph module attached.
It’s even powered by the movement formerly known as a Valjoux 7750 – the Breitling 13. All in all, a solid 8 (out of 10). Buy Now
I hadn’t even realised that there was such a close connection between Breitling’s first Navitimer and the 7750. I have a Fortis with the movement. It is extraordinary accurate as well as providing a very use able chronograph. It’s Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750-based movement that has a different chronograph layout. Admittedly, the “tri-compax” layout of the Breitling caliber 04 movement is slightly more attractive. More so, the caliber 04 equipped models have a sapphire crystal window display caseback – which is still something uncommon for Breitling watches.
This important model was powered by the Valjoux 7750, which also powered the iconic Breitling Navitimer. Thus, two of Breitling’s most important chronographs owe their success to Edmond Capt and his remarkable creation. The Iconic Valjoux 7750 Chronograph Movement: Everything You Need to Know.
